#MentalFortitudeMonday Be Proactive With Your Mental Health

For many veterans who transition into first responder roles, the consensus is clear: mental health in the first responder world is a rough road. It is not just Combat Veterans that suffer from mental health issues, so don’t feel like you have to be in an intense firefight to have mental health issues. You’re constantly exposed to traumatic events—sometimes critical incidents—only to head home and attempt to reset, as if nothing happened. If you have a family, the expectation is to be present, to be a good husband, wife, father, or mother.

But here’s the hard truth: that reset isn’t automatic.

It’s difficult to share what you’ve seen with your loved ones, and often, the instinct is to protect them. But that silence can turn into isolation. That isolation can lead to resentment, frustration, and deeper struggles down the road.

This is why being proactive with your mental health is not optional—it’s necessary.

It still baffles me that in boot camp, basic training, or academy training, mental health isn’t a core focus—despite it being one of the biggest challenges tactical professionals face. There needs to be proactive mental health training, just like we train for physical fitness.

Take Ownership of Your Mental Health

Strength training – Not just for your body, but for your mind. Building physical strength carries over into mental resilience.

Breathwork & Mindfulness – Tactical professions bring high allostatic loads over time. Breath control, meditation, and other mindfulness practices can help regulate the nervous system, improve sleep, and reduce anxiety. It doesn’t have to be extreme—five minutes before bed can make a huge difference.

Seek Professional Support Early – You don’t need to wait until you hit rock bottom to find a therapist or counselor. Build that relationship now, so if you ever need it, you already have a trusted professional in your corner.

Make Mental Resilience a Daily Habit – Just like you wouldn’t wait until you’re out of shape to start working out, don’t wait until you’re struggling to take care of your mental health.
